How to Read and Transcribe the Old English Alphabet
Historical Old English (Anglo-Saxon) was originally transcribed using the 24-character Futhorc runic alphabet before transitioning to the Latin script in the 7th century under Christian monastic scribes. Scribes incorporated unique runes such as Ash (ร, รฆ), Eth (ร, รฐ), Thorn (ร, รพ), and Wynn (วท, ฦฟ) to express Germanic phonemes absent in classical Latin.
By the High Middle Ages, this evolved into the formal Blackletter Fraktur alphabet featured on this chart. Today, these 26 letters are universally recognized in heraldic crests, Chicano lettering tattoos, and heavy metal logos.
